How to properly clean a hairbrush and when to replace it

Yulia PoteriankoLife
The frequency of comb care depends on many factors

A comb is a beauty tool that almost everyone possesses and uses daily. But how frequently do you clean it? Meanwhile, the health of your hair and scalp depends on its condition. The teeth collect dead skin and hair particles, sebum, residues of styling products, and, finally, ordinary household dust. Bacteria and fungi thrive in this mixture. That's why it's crucial to know how to clean your hairbrush or comb.

That's why OBOZREVATEL has compiled some life hacks on how to clean this tool and tells you how often it needs to be changed.

Step 1 - remove hair

Losing a few hairs a day is a normal, natural process of hair renewal, and these hairs often get stuck in the comb. Therefore, the first step in cleaning it is to remove the hairs that have accumulated between the teeth. Take out everything you can with your fingers, or you can use another comb. The main thing is not to damage the instrument itself.

Step 2 - soaking

To rinse the instrument properly, pay attention to the material it is made of.

Plastic or metal - put it in a bowl of warm water and about 2 tablespoons of your regular shampoo, soak for 10 minutes, and then clean it with a toothbrush or cotton swab. If necessary, brush the item with a toothbrush and a little baking soda.

Wood or natural fiber - brushes made of natural materials should not be soaked, but only dipped in warm, soapy water and then brushed. Ideally, only the working part of the wooden comb should be soaked, avoiding getting water on the handle.

It is better to use a shampoo for cleaning the comb without silicones, ceramides, or other components that cover the hair. After all, these same particles can accumulate on the comb.

Step 3 - rinse

When the main cleaning step is complete, rinse the brush with clean, cool water until all the soap is rinsed off. Massage brushes should be squeezed at the pad to remove all moisture from underneath. Then, let the combs dry in the open air for at least 12 hours, laid out on a dry towel with the bristles facing down. If you need to dry the tool immediately, you can blow it with a hair dryer.

Life hack with vinegar

If you want to degrease your hairbrush properly, you can soak it for a few minutes in a bowl of water with a tablespoon of vinegar before cleaning it.

How often do you need to clean your hairbrush?

You don't need to create a cleaning schedule. The rate at which dirt accumulates depends on your hair type, skin condition, and the care products you use, so there is no one-size-fits-all rule.

Just pay attention to the condition of the comb. When it looks stale, especially around the bristles, you can send it to a bowl of soapy water.

How often do you need to change your hairbrush?

Like any good tool, a comb needs to be replaced periodically. If its teeth are bent or broken, or if cracks appear at the base, it means that the comb will no longer perform its function properly and should be replaced. You also need to change the tool if you have difficulty cleaning it from hair.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL told you how best to dry your hair - with a hairdryer or naturally in the air.
