How to prepare a lawn for winter: it's very simple, but there are nuances
Neat green grass adorns your yard or garden during the warm season, but in September you need to prepare your lawn for the cold weather. To make it beautiful and bright in the spring, you need to make a lot of effort and devote enough time now.
OBOZREVATEL has collected tips to help you do this. To avoid "bald spots" on the lawn, do everything you can before the first frost.
Watering
The first stage of lawn care includes watering. In the second half of September, owners should stop moistening the grass. Excessive moisture in the soil has a negative effect on the grass, especially if there has been a lot of rainfall. But this does not mean that you need to stop watering abruptly, do it gradually, based on weather conditions.
Cleaning up
Next, you need to clear the lawn of fallen leaves, twigs, and dry grass. This is best done with a small rake. Try to avoid harsh movements to avoid damaging the grass. Also remove all weeds and moss.
Mowing
In late September or early October, mow the lawn for the last time this season. If the weather is still warm later, then you should repeat the mowing. The main thing is that the grass should not be higher than 4-5 cm in winter.
Aeration
This is the process of saturating the soil with air. Use a pitchfork to make small punctures over the entire surface, then mulch all the depressions. You can make your own mulch from compost, peat, and sand in a 1:1:1 ratio.
Fertilizing
Before the onset of frost, it is necessary to fertilize the soil to make it easier for the grass to withstand the temperature change. Choose a potassium-phosphorus fertilizer or one with a minimum nitrogen content.
