How to dry towels correctly: why you shouldn't keep them in the bathroom

Drying clothes in winter can be challenging. If you leave them on the dryer in a room for an extended period, they can start to develop an unpleasant smell.

According to experts, excess humidity can even lead to the growth of "harmful bacteria." The Express explains how to correctly dry towels and why you should avoid keeping them in the bathroom.

John Lawless from Big Bathroom Shop has pointed out that during the cold season, washing towels can become a hassle as drying them often presents issues.

Towels that are left hanging in an unventilated, damp room can create a favorable environment for bacterial growth.

"You should avoid leaving towels in the bathroom. If the conditions aren't right, this can significantly increase the risk of harmful bacteria development," emphasized the expert.

Experts suggest that the appearance of an unpleasant "musty" odor is the first sign of bacteria.

The primary advice is to air out the towels after each use. This should be done approximately two to three times between each wash.

If your bathroom lacks a fan or has insufficient heating, it is recommended to use a more spacious area to hang your towels for drying. You can hang them on a balcony or a drying rack in a well-ventilated, dry room with an open window.

Lawless also recommended investing in a dehumidifier to help eliminate excess moisture from the air.

"Indoor humidity tends to rise in freezing weather, which can make it take longer for towels to dry indoors. A dehumidifier will extract some of the moisture from the air and allow you to dry your towels more quickly," stated the expert.
