How to properly clean your glasses

Cleaning your glasses daily is the best way to maintain their appearance and avoid scratches on the lenses. Not only the lenses should be cleaned, but also the frame along with the nose pads and temples.

The All About Vision portal tells you how to get rid of dirt properly. By following these tips, you can keep your optical device in perfect condition.

Today, there are many specialized products that are used to clean glasses from dirt, dust, and bacteria. But all of them are not the best, and not the cheapest option. Therefore, it is more logical to use a simple and affordable dishwashing detergent that everyone has in their kitchen. It perfectly cleans lenses not only from grease, dust and dirt, but also from harmful bacteria.

How to clean glasses properly

How to clean glasses correctly and what you shouldn't do: the main rules

1. Wash and dry your hands

Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning your eyewear. Use soap and water without lotion or dishwashing liquid and a clean, lint-free towel.

2. Rinse the eyewear under running tap water.

This will remove dust and other debris to help avoid scratching the lenses during cleaning. Avoid hot water, which can damage some lens coatings.

3. Apply a small drop of dishwashing liquid to each lens

Most dishwashing liquids are very concentrated, so use only a small amount. Use one that does not contain lotion.

4. Gently wipe both sides of the lens and all parts of the frame

Every part of the eyewear should be cleaned, including the nose pads and frame temples. Also, clean the area where the edge of the lens meets the frame - this is where dust, debris, and sebum often accumulate.

5. Rinse both sides of the lenses and frame

Rinse your glasses thoroughly. If you do not remove all traces of soap, the lenses will remain stained after drying.

6. Shake the glasses gently to remove most of the water from the lenses

Carefully inspect the lenses to make sure they are clean.

7. Gently wipe the lenses and frame with a clean, lint-free towel

Use a towel that has not been washed with fabric softener or dryer sheets (these substances can stain the lenses). Microfiber is also a good choice. Make sure the cloth is perfectly clean. Dirt or debris stuck in the fibers of the towel can scratch the lenses. Also, any residue of cooking oil or skin cream on the towel will stain your glasses.

8. Inspect the lenses again.

If there are any streaks or spots, remove them with a clean microfiber cloth. For colored lenses, use disposable lens cleaning wipes. They are specially designed for such glasses.

What not to do

How to clean glasses correctly and what you shouldn't do: the main rules

Do not use the sleeves or hem of your clothes to clean your glasses. This method is not suitable at all. The fabric can scratch the lenses. In addition, it will not be able to clean the glasses from dirt, and dust particles and bacteria will remain on them.

Do not use saliva to wet the lenses.

Do not use household glass or surface cleaners to clean your eyewear. These products contain ingredients that can damage the lenses and coating of the glasses.

Do not use paper towels, napkins, or toilet paper to clean lenses. They can scratch or stain the lenses and leave lint on them.

Do not try to buff out a scratch on the lenses. This will only make the situation worse.
