How to behave on the bus: elementary rules of etiquette

Julia PeschanskayaLife

People who have ever traveled by bus have encountered the problem of passengers breaking obvious rules of etiquette and thus disturbing others. In any situation one should remember the norms that will ensure a pleasant atmosphere and help to avoid awkward moments.

Real politeness is shown in unusual and emergency situations. OBOZREVATEL has compiled a list of rules that every passenger should observe during a long bus ride.

Luggage

You should put your main luggage in a special compartment on the bus, and take only what may be useful during the trip. Think about the contents of your hand luggage in advance so that it does not interfere with the person sitting next to you on the road. Only lightweight items should be placed on the top shelves so that they do not fall out on others.

Personal space

Everyone has their own personal space, so try to avoid physical contact during the trip, do not talk too loudly and listen to music or watch movies only with headphones.

If you want to get to know a passenger, start a conversation politely and with a smile, but if you see that the person is reluctant to make contact, it is better to leave them alone.

Food, perfume

Perhaps the most common problem when traveling on the bus is snacking. Take foods that don't have a pungent odor with you, because some people may even be exhausted. It's better to eat outside during your stop, that way you definitely won't disturb anyone.

Also, don't use perfume with a pungent, strong scent if you're going on a trip. For example, your roommate may be allergic to them.

Raise the back of your seat when you get off the bus

If you decide to get off during a bus stop, remember to raise the back of your seat back to the position it was originally in. This is because it may disturb other passengers.

Children

Young children do not yet understand all the rules of behavior, so they may interfere with other people on the bus. Before the trip, talk to them and prepare them for the fact that you will be traveling for a long time with other passengers and should behave politely.

Also think about what to do with your child on the bus, take their toys or download their favorite cartoon.

Don't disturb the driver

The driver must not be distracted from the journey and should only be contacted if the matter cannot be postponed until the next stop. The driver is responsible for the safety of all passengers, so be courteous and understanding when he/she cannot fulfill your request.
