How to make an orchid bloom

It is challenging to find a more temperamental houseplant than an orchid. Awakening dormant buds can be a tricky task, leading experts to recommend unconventional methods.

Recent studies suggest that orchids respond well to "ice watering." Placing three ice cubes on the bark shavings or sphagnum moss where the plant is located is deemed sufficient. However, creating the right conditions is crucial to induce flowering in orchids. OBOZREVATEL has compiled the most effective methods to awaken dormant buds.

Lighting Conditions

Experts recommend artificially reducing the duration of daylight hours for the plant. Simply move the pot to a shaded area. However, it's crucial not to place the orchid in complete darkness, as such stress is detrimental.

Temperature Changes

Ensure the temperature in which the orchid grows does not drop below 16 °C. In spring, when it becomes warmer, you can relocate the plant outdoors, such as to a yard or balcony. Avoid exposing it to temperatures exceeding 25°C, as orchids are not fond of excessive heat.

Fresh air provides the orchid with more carbon dioxide, influencing root development, leaf growth, and the emergence of flower stalks. Implement temperature changes for 1-2 weeks.

Humidity and Fertilizers

To awaken the buds, increase the humidity level by regularly spraying the plant. However, monitor the substrate's quality and condition, avoiding overwatering. Nitrogenous fertilizers can also be beneficial.

Orchids respond well to citrus fertilizers, which can be made from orange juice or peels.

Artificial growth stimulation

If you have attempted various methods and fertilizers, and the buds still refuse to bloom, consider the method of artificial stimulation.

Cytokinin paste is a phytohormonal vitamin preparation available in specialized garden stores.

Apply the paste with extreme care. Gently lift and remove the top scale on the bud using a clean tool, then apply a thin layer of the paste using a cotton swab or toothpick.

Ensure the product does not come into contact with the orchid's leaves and roots. According to experts, within 2 weeks, you should observe the emergence of a flower stalk.

Previously, OBOZREVATEL reported that experts recommend adjusting the watering schedule by increasing the intervals. For instance, if you have been watering the orchid every 4 days, consider watering it every 8 days.
