Catholic Nativity of John the Baptist: all about the feast on 24 June
The Catholic Church's calendar celebrates the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist on 24 June. The prophet, called the forerunner of Jesus Christ, is one of the most revered saints, so his holiday has the highest rank of celebration in Catholicism.
OBOZREVATEL tells about this feast. And also about the bans associated with it, and the omens of June 24.
What is celebrated on Nativity of John the Baptist
The future Baptist was born to a very old couple, the priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth, who lived at the time of King Herod. The Jews ridiculed the couple for failing to give life to the child, so they prayed to God, who responded by sending them a son.
Zechariah also received the news that his offspring would be the forerunner of the Saviour. This happened while he was serving in the temple in Jerusalem. At first he did not believe the prophecy he had received. The Archangel Gabriel deprived him of the gift of speech. Zacharias was able to speak again when the child was born and given a name.
Son John followed the way of his father, becoming a priest. He chose the bank of the Jordan River as the place for his preaching. When he was 30 years old a young man came to him to receive baptism. It was Jesus. John knew whom he saw in front of him and did not want to perform the ceremony, saying that he himself should be baptized by the future Savior, but he insisted. When Jesus entered the Jordan water, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove appeared above his head. Ivan's mission was accomplished.
Holiday according to the folk calendar - Strawberry Barnabas
On this day Ukrainians celebrated the Day of Saint Barnabas, who was also known as Strawberry. On this day people were not allowed to rip the grass, and use fruits from trees and bushes for food.
On this day all kinds of evil spirits were believed to be active, so they made amulets of dried grass. Women also made amulets for their husbands' fidelity on this day.
St. Barnabas was nicknamed St. Barnabas, because it was considered that until his day the strawberries and strawberries were not yet ripe. Afterwards, the strawberry season began.
