How to wash canning jars: a budget solution will help
Canning is something that is relevant at any time of the year because each season has its own products that make delicious preparations. In order to keep them for as long as possible, you need to prepare the jars properly.
As you know, jars need to be not only sterilized but also washed well before canning. The main mistake is to wash glassware with classic detergents. So, the FoodOboz editorial team has gathered information and will tell you how to prepare a budget-friendly homemade solution for washing jars.
Ingredients:
- baking soda
- water
Ratio: 1 tsp baking soda per 1 liter water.
Method of preparation:
1. First, dissolve baking soda in water and mix.
2. Wash jars well in the resulting solution.
Tip: Baking soda can be replaced with laundry soap.
As for sterilization, the jars can be sterilized by steaming over a saucepan and in the oven.
Steam sterilization over a saucepan
Fill a saucepan with water about halfway up and bring it to a boil. Put the lids in the pot and place a colander, sieve, or wire rack on top. Place the dry jars on top with the neck down. You can also use a special sterilizer. This device looks like a flat lid with one or more holes where the jars are inserted. Small jars should stand over the steam for about 6-8 minutes, 1-2 liter jars for 10-15 minutes, and containers of 3 liters or more for 20-25 minutes. When large drops of water appear on the inner walls of the jars, remove the jars and place them on a clean, dry towel with the neck down. Carefully remove the lids and place them on the towel with the inside down.
Sterilizing jars in the oven
Place the jars on a baking sheet or rack in a cold oven. It does not matter whether you place them neck up or down. You can put the jars in the oven immediately after washing them. Screw-on lids can be put in the oven. Do not sterilize lids with elastic bands as they may melt (they should be boiled in water for 10-15 minutes). Close the oven and set the temperature to 100-110 degrees. Keep the jars inside for about 20 minutes. The sterilization time depends on their volume. Turn off the oven and leave the jars for a few minutes to cool slightly. Take them out with a dry towel. If it is wet, the jars may burst due to the temperature difference.
