How to keep spices fresh and flavorful for a long time: there are just a few secrets

How to store spices

Improper storage can cause spices to lose their flavor and aroma. Even the texture of some seasonings can change under the influence of temperature fluctuations.

The Express publication told us where the best place to store spices is to maximize the flavor and aroma. Most often, spices are stored in jars on the kitchen counter for easy access during cooking.

Chrissy Scommegna, owner and founder of Boonville Barn Collective, said it is important to store spices in containers that are hermetically sealed. The more air in the container, the faster the spices will spoil.

It is better to use glass jars, as they have strong seals on the lids that help the spices retain their flavor longer.

Do not keep spices in transparent containers in direct sunlight. Choose a cool, dark place and do not leave spices near the stove.

Sommegna recommended choosing dark-colored jars to "protect" the ingredients from too much light.

Many people store spices until the jar is empty, but the actual shelf life depends on how fresh they are at the time of purchase. Typically, ground spices can be stored for up to one year, and whole spices for 2-3 years.
