On Saturday, 13 May, at 22:00 Kyiv time, the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 final will take place in Liverpool, where participants from 20 countries will compete for the top spot. It is known that Ukraine will perform at number 19. It automatically qualifies for the grand final as it won last year.

Bookmakers predict that the crystal microphone will go to Loreen, a representative of Sweden. The second place according to their rating will go to the shocking singer from Finland Käärijä, and the third place to the duo from Ukraine TVORCHI.

Let's see if the bookmakers' bets are justified. In the meantime, let us recall in the OBOZREVATEL article which participating countries have most often won this international song contest.

Brief retrospective

The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in 1956, on a rather modest scale. Seven countries took part in it back then: Switzerland, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Each of the performers prepared 2 songs, and the Swiss representative Lys Assia won. In 1957, Austria, Denmark and the United Kingdom joined the competition, and a year later, Sweden, Finland, Spain and Yugoslavia. Then came Portugal and Ireland.

Ukraine and Eurovision in numbers

Ukraine's journey at the Eurovision Song Contest began relatively recently - in 2003. Back then, Oleksandr Ponomariov went to represent it with the song Hasta la vista. He took 14th place.

Ukraine had missed the previous 47 contests, but became the country with the most victories in the 21st century. It is also the only country to have won three times since 2000. It has participated 17 times, of which 10 times it reached the grand final.

Ukraine's victories at the Eurovision Song Contest:

Who has won the Eurovision Song Contest most often

Ireland has won the most crystal microphones - 7 times. It all started in 1970. That's when Dana Scallon performed the sensual song All Kinds of Everything. Later, the Irish took first place three times in a row - from 1992 to 1994.

The second leading country is Sweden. It has won 6 times. The first time was in 1974, when the ABBA quartet travelled to the UK with the song Waterloo. In 2012, Loreen won. She performed the song Euphoria, which remains one of the most popular hits of the contest in the history of its existence. It seems that in 2023, the winner decided to repeat her success, but with the sensual and rhythmic song Tattoo.

Third in terms of the number of victories: France, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Each of these countries has won the grand final five times.

Israel is in fourth place, having won 4 crystal microphones, 2 of which in a row (in 1978 and 1979). The most memorable performance for the audience was Netta Barzilai's incendiary track Toy (2018).

The fifth place is shared by Ukraine, Denmark, Norway and Italy. Each of these countries has won three times. Perhaps this year's participants from Ukraine, the TVORCHI band, will bring back a fourth victory from Liverpool. The chances are there.
