The best way to remove limescale from the kettle: will waste less electricity

We often treat limescale in the kettle as an unavoidable nuisance, which means that it is not worth worrying about it. Meanwhile, lime scale in the appliance can increase your energy bills. It interferes with the heat exchange inside the kettle and it takes more time and energy to heat water. So just 3 mm of scale increases energy consumption by 25%. In addition, limescale can flake off and end up in your drinks. Therefore, experts advise to have on hand an effective way to descale the kettle.

According to the publication Express, experts on household appliances are advised to use a remedy that is available in almost every kitchen. We are talking about food acids such as white vinegar or lemon juice or citric acid.

The kettle should be filled to the level where the limescale is in it with a mixture of water and vinegar in the ratio of 1:1. Alternatively, water with the juice of one lemon or with one sachet of citric acid. Next, the remedy should be left to act for an hour, and then boil the cleansing mixture. Vinegar or citric acid is enough to heat to a boil once, for lemon juice may require 2-3 boilings.

After that, let the kettle cool and rinse it thoroughly several times. You can gently rub the walls and bottom with a stiff side of a sponge to remove undissolved residues, which have become much softer and more pliable.

If you want to avoid scaling in the future, use only filtered water for boiling. This can be a filter pitcher or stationary filter, or separately purchased pre-filtered water. A stationary filter that softens tap water will also protect your washing machine and dishwasher. But it will, of course, cost significantly more.
