The Creative Artists Agency has revealed the cause of death of The Hunger Games star Donald Sutherland. According to the official statement, the celebrity passed away due to a "long illness".

"Famed actor Donald Sutherland died today in Miami, Florida, after a long illness," the statement reads. No other details about the cause of his death were provided, Today writes.

Sutherland's 57-year-old son, famed actor Kiefer Sutherland, also confirmed his father's death in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, "It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. Personally, I think he is one of the most important actors in the history of cinema... He loved what he did and did what he loved."

Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, five children - sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, and daughter Rachel - and four grandchildren. As a child, the star suffered from many diseases, including hepatitis, rheumatic fever, and polio, according to The New York Times. As a result, one of his legs was shorter than the other.

The news of Sutherland's death was met with a wave of tributes and remembrances by his star colleagues, the Independent reports. Several celebrities, including actor Michael Douglas and singer Nancy Sinatra, reacted to Donald's death.

Alongside a photo of him and Sutherland in the 1994 mystery thriller Disclosure, Douglas wrote on Instagram, "What a sweet, talented and interesting man. RIP Donald Sutherland". Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren, Tom Blyth, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others also expressed their condolences.
