Doctor Who legend William Russell has died at the age of 99. The actor became famous in 1956, starring in the series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot.

However, Russell became famous for his role as Ian Chesterton in the BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who, which was released in 1965. This was reported by Metro.

Russell also played in the 1978 films The Escape, Superman, and Coronation Street. He reprised his role as Doctor Who in 2022 in the special episode The Power of the Doctor, 57 years after his character's last appearance on screen.

The celebrity broke the world record for the longest break between television appearances. Russell reportedly passed away on June 3. It is not known for certain what caused his death.

The star is survived by his second wife, Etheline, whom he married in 1984, and their son Alfred, as well as children from his first marriage Vanessa, Laetitia, Robert and four grandchildren. Alfred followed in his father's footsteps and became an actor. One of the young man's famous works was the role of Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter films.
