What color is the dress? Author of the viral meme that "broke the Internet" almost killed his wife

Author of the dress meme pleads guilty to assaulting his wife

38-year-old Keir Johnston, the author of the viral meme about a dress that "broke the Internet" in 2015, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife. In 2022, he nearly strangled her on the remote Scottish island of Colonsay.

The man will be remanded in custody pending sentencing on June 6. In court, he took responsibility for the horrific act after lengthy hearings, The Mirror writes.

In 2015, Keir and his beloved Grace had a wedding, where the bride's mother wore the famous dress. The newly-made family posted a photo online, where ordinary users and celebrities joined the discussion of the color of the dress.

Comments were divided between those who saw blue and black and those who saw gold and white. The couple became popular in their country, appeared on talk shows and even received $10 thousand from patrons for a vacation.

However, no one knew that in this marriage, Grace suffered violence and abuse by her chosen one. On March 6, 2022, Johnston attacked his wife in their home and threatened her, saying, "Someone is going to die."

The prosecutor in court argued that the woman feared for her life because there was no police station on the island, and her husband forbade her to travel to the mainland at will. The last time when Grace ignored his discontent and went for a job interview almost ended in tragedy.

Keir, according to the prosecution, began manipulating his wife's guilt by getting drunk at a bar. When she returned, the man announced his intention to divorce, after which he grabbed Grace and threw her down, pinning her to the ground.

"He put both his knees on her arms, so she couldn't move. Then he started choking her with both hands. At first, she could scream, but she was afraid for her life and believed that Johnston intended to kill her because he was using force," the prosecutor said.

After a long trial, the man pleaded guilty, and the court ruled to keep him behind bars until at least June 6.
