"To all the fans and friends who love Coco Lee. It is with great sadness that we would like to share some sad news with you. Coco suffered from depression a few years ago. Recently, her condition worsened. She attempted suicide at home on 2 July. She was then taken to hospital. She remained in a coma for several days. Despite the efforts of doctors, Coco died on 5 July. In 2023, it would have been 30 years since Coco's debut. She brought us endless joy with her singing," the celebrity's relatives wrote in a post.
Back in 1998, Walt Disney Pictures invited celebrities to sing the soundtrack and voice Mulan in the Mandarin version of the Disney animated film of the same name. In 2021, Coco re-recorded a version of the song to celebrate the release of Mulan.
"She has worked hard to open up a new world for Chinese singers in international music. We are proud of her. We are grateful to God for giving us such a good angel. We hope that she has now gone to a happier place and is no longer suffering from depression. We know that you will not only miss Coco, but will also remember her radiant smile and kindness," the sisters wrote.
By the way, Lee also performed A Love Before Time from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the 73rd Academy Awards. She became the first Chinese American to perform at the event.
