Mark Zuckerberg is building a complex with a huge underground bunker

Mark Zuckerberg, the American billionaire, founder of Meta and developer of Facebook, is building a huge complex on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, consisting of two mansions and more than ten other buildings. The buildings will be connected by a tunnel leading to a huge underground bunker.

Zuckerberg bought this land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean back in 2014. The construction of the complex and the bunker is top secret, and all workers sign a non-disclosure agreement. Nevertheless, WIRED managed to interview some of the former workers, as well as to read public records and court documents about the construction of one of the most expensive estates in the world.

No one working on the project is allowed to talk about what they are building. Everyone who works on the complex-from carpenters to electricians, painters, and security guards-is bound by a strict non-disclosure agreement. And, according to insiders, these agreements are not a formality. Many workers claim to have seen or heard of their colleagues being removed from the project for posting photos of their workplace. Different construction crews on the site are assigned to separate locations, and workers are not allowed to talk to other crews about their work, sources say.

Interestingly, the project is so large-scale that most of the island's population is under a non-disclosure agreement.

The facility is known as the Kulau Ranch and will include a 5,000-square-foot (465 m²) underground vault. A 55-foot (17-meter) diameter and 18-foot (5.5-meter) high water tank will be placed on the property, and the 1,400-acre (567-hectare) ranch and agriculture area is already ready to grow food.

The buildings within the complex contain at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms. They are centered around two mansions with a total area of 57 thousand square feet (5,295 m²), which contain several elevators, offices, conference rooms, and an industrial-sized kitchen.

A network of 11 disk-shaped tree houses is planned in the adjacent wooded area, which will be connected by elaborate rope bridges allowing visitors to move from one building to another while remaining among the treetops. The building on the other side of the main mansions will include a full-size gym, swimming pools, sauna, hot tub, cold plunge, and tennis court. The area is dotted with other guest houses and outbuildings. The scale of the project suggests that it will be more than a personal vacation home. By the way, Zuckerberg has already held two corporate events in this complex.

The project's cost rivals the cost of the largest private, personal construction projects in human history. According to the source, the price of the main construction is about $100 million. And this is without taking into account the amount that the media mogul paid when buying the land - 170 million. That is, in total, $270 million. However, as the investigation notes, this is probably an underestimate. The cost of construction on the remote island is still higher than before the pandemic.

Due to the secrecy and scale of the project, many rumors are spreading on the island. Some say that Zuckerberg is building a huge underground city. Others suggest that this place will become a kind of post-apocalyptic bunker in case of the collapse of civilization.
