In the Guggenheim Museum, old sneakers were mistaken for a work of art: the video went viral

The museum mistook old sneakers for a work of art

The Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York, USA, has temporarily acquired a new exhibit - old sneakers. They became a work of art by accident, but almost immediately attracted the attention of visitors.

The shoes were lying in a corner of one of the museum's halls, and several art lovers took pictures of them on their phones. The video was posted on TikTok by an Internet user under the nickname smith_tok.

The video showed one of the group of friends standing in only one sneaker, while the other part of the shoe was lying under the wall. Ironic laughter could be heard behind the scenes because people were interested in the old dirty shoe.

The video went viral and in four days gained over 14.6 million views and 2 million likes. There were even Ukrainians among the 8,000 comments, which indicates that it has been recommended by social media users around the world.

One of the commenters wrote: "The PinchukArtCentre in one video" with a subtext about contemporary art and the fact that anyone can be assigned to this cohort.

Other comments included:

  • "It would be cool if a dude walked up to them, put on his shoes and left."
  • "It shows and proves how easy it is to fool people."
  • "This art looks so lonely... A sneaker without a pair..."
  • "It proves how people don't understand art."
  • "And that's what art is all about, everyone can see something out of nothing, so from the point of view of a commoner it's ridiculous, but from the point of view of the intelligentsia it's also art, a kind of performance."
  • "We'll find it on Pinterest."
  • "Art, what can we talk about? It's like Balenciaga..."

In particular, someone shared their own experience and similar situations:

  • "I saw a guy take a nap on a bench in a contemporary art museum, and people started taking pictures of him, thinking it was an installation."
  • "My dad and a friend made a paper boat and put it on display in a museum. You should have seen the reactions of people."
  • "When I was at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago taking pictures of what I thought was an exhibition, I was later told that the building was under construction and that boxes were not contemporary art."
  • "In art school, someone once left a hot dog on a table that stayed there for several weeks because the cleaners weren't sure if it was a work of art or not."
