Woman arrested in Iran for performing without a hijab

In Iran, a country that has hateful rules about the "correct" way women should look, citizen Zara Esmaili was taken into custody for not wearing a hijab and publicly performing Amy Winehouse's legendary song Back to Black, which has become an anthem of female dignity.

She was arrested on Saturday, August 3, after a video of her performance went viral online. After that, the family had no contact with the girl and does not know where she is. This was reported by Metro.

A source close to the family confirmed that "Zara's family could not find her." Esmaili is known for performing without a hijab on the streets of Tehran and singing in public places. This was a form of protest against Iran's repressive laws that restrict women's freedom.

"Zara, an Iranian singer, is imprisoned in Tehran Central Detention Center (Fashafueh) for the crime of singing in public. She is under pressure from investigators to admit to links with activists and musicians outside Iran. This allegation is a lie and was made by a think tank of the Islamic Republic," Iranian singer and founder of the Berlin-based Right to Sing campaign Faravaz Vardeen said. Faravaz Farvardin, the Iranian singer and founder of the Berlin campaign "Right to Sing".

Activists are trying to spread the word about the singer's arrest online, posting under the hashtag #FreeZara.

It is known that for several decades, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been speaking out against the "poisoning of the nation by Western culture." Zara Esmaili's arrest came after the authorities announced a new plan to restrict women's right to choose. This happened against the backdrop of the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, which began with the assassination of Mahsa Amini in 2022.

Recommendations

Probably, another reason for the arrest was the choice of the song that the activist performed. She chose Amy Winehouse's hit song Back to Black, which is about the struggle against the environment, which supposedly knows better how to live, about betrayal, about self-destruction, and about returning to depression and addiction.
