Important changes in the case of Alec Baldwin in the murder of Halyna Hutchins: the prosecutor made a fateful decision
The case of American actor Alec Baldwin for the murder of Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust has finally come to a close. The prosecutor decided not to appeal the decision to drop all charges against the 66-year-old star, which was made about six months ago, which means that the long-running criminal case is officially closed.
According to People, the actor's defense attorneys said that the withdrawal of the appeal confirms the position they have held since the beginning of the trial. They noted: "This was a terrible tragedy, but Alec Baldwin committed no crime. The rule of law remains intact in New Mexico."
Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey noted that any decisions made during the trial were related to the search for justice for the cameraman.
"We regret that Mr. Baldwin will not be held accountable for the role he played in the death of Halyna Hutchins. By withdrawing the appeal, we are doing so in the hope that the pending lawsuits will bring justice to the family of Halyna Hutchins," Morrissey said.
According to prosecutor Mary Carmack-Altivis, despite the fact that she does not entirely agree with the dismissal of the case, she supports the decision to withdraw the appeal. She added that the deadly incident demonstrated the need for a thorough review of the use of firearms and live ammunition on set. The same opinion is shared by the family of Halyna Hutchins.
As a reminder, on October 21, 2021, a cameraman from Ukraine, Halyna Hutchins, was shot dead during the making of the film Rust. Alec Baldwin was preparing for a scene where he was supposed to point his revolver at the camera and shoot. However, the weapon was loaded, and the bullet hit the cameraman. Hutchins was shot through the chest and died. Since then, the actor's trial has begun.
In April 2023, the charges of manslaughter against the cameraman were dropped, but it was noted that they could be brought again if the investigation found the necessary evidence. Over time, the investigation was reopened on the grounds of reckless use of firearms and disrespect for the safety of others. At that time, Baldwin faced up to 18 months in prison.
The first to be punished was the gunner Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who was responsible for Alec Baldwin's gun. It was alleged that she did not do her job properly, and a tragedy occurred on the set. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
In the summer of 2024, Alec Baldwin was finally cleared of all charges in the case of the cameraman's murder. The judges made this decision because prosecutors did not hand over important evidence, namely a box of ammunition, as required by law. Now the case is officially closed.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that Halyna Hutchins' mother refused to come to the premiere of the movie Rust because of Alec Baldwin.
