Of all the bedding, the pillow comes into contact with exposed skin the most, which is why it gets dirty the most. Even if you have a replaceable pillowcase. And that's why dust mites love to settle in pillows, feeding on dead skin particles and causing various diseases.
But this does not mean that pillows need to be thrown away and replaced with new ones frequently. According to the Express, there are several ways to freshen things up and give them a pleasant smell. For advice, it turned to bedding manufacturers, including Carl Walsh, who has worked in the industry for over 40 years.
Removing small stains
To remove spot stains, dilute your usual laundry detergent in warm water to create a lather. Rub this foam gently into the stain with a sponge until it disappears. Air-dry the pillow in this way.
To remove unpleasant or foreign odours from your pillow, choose a sunny day. To treat it, remove the pillowcase, place it on a flat surface and sprinkle it with baking soda. In this state, leave the pillow in the sun for 2-3 hours, then vacuum it thoroughly with a brush for upholstered furniture. Solar ultraviolet light will also disinfect your item.
Washing in the washing machine
Most modern cushions made of artificial materials can be machine washed, but you should read the instructions beforehand. Different materials require different temperatures and detergents. Important: Cushions made of memory foam should not be cleaned in this way.
How to clean memory foam pillows
To wash such an item, put warm water and a small amount of mild detergent in a basin or bathtub. Immerse the pillow in this solution and press it several times so that the soapy water passes through the internal structure and rinses it. Next, rinse the pillow in clean water several times in the same way until it stops foaming. Next, squeeze the pillow with a few presses. Do not unscrew it - this can damage the internal structure. Let it dry naturally.
There can be several reasons for the appearance of yellow spots on the pillow. In any case, it is better to solve this problem as soon as possible, before the dirt is ingrained in the fabric.
If these are traces of sebum from the face or hair, simply treat the stain with shampoo - apply it, soak the area with warm water and rub it. After that, wash the pillow as usual.
Traces of sweat and saliva are best treated with a mixture of water and white vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. Similar stains on pillowcases can be treated in the same way. Just soak the item for half an hour in the solution and wash it as usual.
The remnants of artificial tanning products are well removed by a washing gel based on frents. But it should not contain bleach.
Experts also advised to wash or clean pillows every three months. This way, they will not have time to accumulate harmful microorganisms. With about the same frequency, they can be fried in the sun for disinfection.
