How to get rid of stains on painted walls: an easy way without repainting

Washing even waterproof painted walls can be a futile exercise, as water still has the ability to leave stains. And all that remains is to repaint everything again.

However, Lifehacker claims that you can use improvised means to get rid of dirt on the walls without resorting to such radical methods. The main principle is to start removing stains with a light wipe, gradually increasing the intensity as needed.

Dishwashing liquid

Mix mild dishwashing liquid with water in a 1:2 ratio. Use a cloth dampened with the mixture to apply the soapy water to the stain. Gently rub the stained area in an up and down motion, then rinse with clean, clear water and dry the wall thoroughly with a conventional hairdryer on a cold air setting.

Baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice

If the dishwashing detergent method doesn't work, prepare a mixture of white vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda. Add the ingredients to a spray bottle, shake it well, spray it on the stain and leave it to work for about an hour. You may need to repeat this process several times to remove the stain completely. Therefore, choose a time for cleaning when you can leave the product on the wall several times.

How to remove water stains from wood

If water stains have appeared on wooden panels or furniture in your home, you can try to deal with the problem yourself.

Apply plain mayonnaise to the stain and leave it overnight. In the morning, wipe off the residue and polish the wood.

You can also mix vinegar and olive oil in equal parts and apply it to the stain with a cloth, wiping in the direction of the fibres until the stain disappears. After this treatment, you can polish the surface with a clean, dry cloth.

You can also try placing an iron on low heat over the stain with a cloth underneath. Press the iron for a few seconds and see if the stain disappears. Repeat the attempt until it disappears. This method works better with water stains that are still wet.
