First openly transgender Oscar nominee caught up in a scandal over old social media posts
First openly transgender Oscar nominee, Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has found herself in the middle of a scandal over old posts on X. She was criticized for her controversial statements about Muslims, the death of African-American George Floyd, and COVID-19 vaccines.
The posts of the Emilia Pérez star, published them mostly between 2020 and 2021, were brought to the public attention by journalist Sarah Hagi, Variety reports.
"I’m sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic," she wrote (translation of this post and those below by Variety).
In another post, the actress posted a photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant and reflected on Islam.
"Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.".
Gascón also wrote that "Islam fails to comply with international rights." She did not pass by other religions too, "I am so sick of so much of this sh**t, of islam, of christianity, of catholicism and of all the fucking beliefs of morons that violate human rights."
She also spoke about the African-American George Floyd after his death in police custody, which sparked mass protests in the United States.
"I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They’re all wrong," she said.
The actress went on to argue that perhaps it's no longer about racism, but about social classes that feel threatened by each other. In addition, she lashed out at the 2021 Oscars. Back then, Nomadland won the award in the Best Picture category.
"More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala," Karla wrote.
Gascón also spoke about the pandemic. She paid special attention to the Chinese coronavirus vaccine.
"The Chinese vaccine, apart from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a cat that moves its hand, 2 plastic flowers, a pop-up lantern, 3 telephone lines and one euro for your first controlled purchasee," the actress said. "So many scientists in the world making bombs, so many scholars constructing objects for space, so many medicinal factories and there’s no one who can get in line with this Chinese shit. (shrug emoji) In the end, it was a tremendous show for a new variant of the flu, avian or coronavirus."
After controversial statements surfaced on Karla's page, some of her tweets were deleted. Representatives of the actress refused to comment. Netflix and the American Film Academy also did not respond to the request.
