Asma al-Assad, the First Lady and wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was diagnosed with leukemia. Almost 5 years ago, she successfully overcame breast cancer, but the cancer returned in a slightly different form.

The 48-year-old first lady will have to isolate herself from others and cancel all public events to undergo treatment. This was reported on social media by the President of the Syrian Arab Republic.

It is worth noting that leukemia is a blood cancer. It is not known at what stage of cancer Asma al-Assad is.

"After several symptoms and clinical signs appeared and after a comprehensive series of medical tests and examinations, First Lady Asma al-Assad was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Consequently, the First Lady will follow a special treatment protocol that includes strict infection prevention measures and appropriate social distancing. The First Lady will temporarily relinquish all direct responsibilities as part of her treatment plan," the statement said.

It is known that almost five years ago, the First Lady of Syria suffered from breast cancer. However, the disease was at an early stage and was managed to be treated. At the time, the office even shared a photo with the couple from the hospital where Asma al-Assad had already begun treatment.

The fight against cancer lasted for a year, but everything ended optimistically. The First Lady of Syria announced on her own that "all this pain and fatigue is over."
