The U.S. transfers money from a Russian oligarch to Ukraine for the first time: what is known

Malofeyev's money given to Ukraine

The USA has approved the transfer to Ukraine of money confiscated from Russian businessman and oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev. We are talking about $5.4m (nearly 200m hryvnyas).

This was reported by Reuters. The funds had already been confiscated by a U.S. court, and now the head of the U.S. Justice Department and part-time Attorney General Merrick Garland has been authorized to transfer the confiscated funds to Ukraine.

"This is the first time the United States has sent confiscated Russian funds to rebuild Ukraine. But it will not be the last," Garland said.

The decision to confiscate Malofeyev's millions in favor of Ukraine was based on evidence that the businessman financed the Russian military's seizure of Crimea in 2014. The oligarch was also accused of circumventing sanctions.

In Russia, Malofeev is the founder and owner of the propaganda channel Tsargrad TV. Malofeev was also one of the ideologists of the 2014 Russian Spring.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, in March 2023, Russia announced an attempted assassination attempt on Malofeev. The assassination attempt was accused of "Ukrainian special services".
