Police detain more than 100 people throughout Russia for laying flowers in memory of Navalny. Photos
As of the evening of February 17, 104 people have been detained in 9 cities in Russia who took part in actions in memory of the murdered opposition leader Alexei Navalny. People created spontaneous memorials with photos of the politician and brought flowers to them, after which they were arrested by law enforcement.
Statistics on detentions are kept by the Russian human rights project OVD-Info. Human rights activists emphasize that there are many more detained people as the project operates only with the data it has been able to verify.
The number of detainees is constantly changing in both directions: some are released, some are handcuffed again. For example, during the day, this number exceeded 300 people. As of 23:00, 104 people remained in detention in 9 cities.
In particular, the highest number of detainees is currently in St. Petersburg, 69. In Nizhny Novgorod, the number is 15, in Moscow - 10. Detentions are ongoing.
The commemoration of the politician began on the evening of February 16. People laid flowers in the snow next to candles and photos of Navalny and created "people's memorials" (as pictured). And on Saturday morning, the police began to harshly detain people on the streets of Russian cities.
