The widow of US Senator and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the younger brother of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy, human rights activist Ethel Kennedy died at the age of 96. The woman was hospitalized on October 8 due to a stroke.

"She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week. Along with a lifetime's work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly," said Joe Kennedy III.

The woman began to engage in politics before she was married, so it's no surprise that in 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, she helped Robert get elected to the U.S. Senate. And then, in 1968, she worked on his staff when her husband ran for president. In June of that year, Robert was assassinated.
