However, Russia continues to attempt to destabilize the country

After the aggressor country Russia invaded Ukraine last year, the Moldovan government was deeply concerned about Russian attempts to destabilize its country. Moldova has suffered from "hybrid attacks" by a terrorist state, but at this point does not see a military threat from Russia there.

This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country Nicu Popescu. The official gave an interview to NOS."

There is currently no Russian military threat to Moldova, but Russia continues to try to destabilize the country. It's difficult, but we can handle it. As long as Ukraine hangs on, we are safe," Popescu said.

At the same time, he explained why Moldova cannot provide military assistance to Ukraine.

"We participate in consultations on Ramstein, but we have no possibility to supply something to Ukraine ourselves. Most of the equipment of Moldova's 6500th Army is obsolete. 90 percent is from Soviet times," the official said.

According to him, the country is balancing between further rapprochement with the West and avoiding escalation with Russia. At the same time, support for NATO membership is much lower than the desire to join the EU. Only a quarter of the population is strongly in favor of joining the alliance.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the Russian Foreign Ministry threatened Moldova because of the country's desire to cooperate with NATO. "Diplomats" said that rapprochement with the Alliance "is fraught with the loss of sovereignty," and recalled the war in Ukraine, but were ridiculed by network users for "playing with muscles.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the neutrality of the country is the choice of the citizens, which the authorities cannot give up now. At the same time, she admitted that at present Moldova is actually protected by the Ukrainian army and not by its neutral status.

Sandu reiterated Moldova's position on the Russian war against Ukraine. The politician stated that the country "has never been and will never be on the side of murderers," and has condemned Russian aggression since the first day of the full-scale invasion.
