Biden may return nuclear weapons seized from Ukraine in 1990s – NYT

Some officials have suggested that U.S. President Joe Biden could return nuclear weapons to Ukraine that were seized after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It could play a role as a deterrent against new Russian attacks after a potential peace treaty.

The New York Times wrote about this. In the article, journalists cite several unnamed officials without providing additional information.

"It would be an immediate and huge deterrent. But such a move would be difficult and have serious consequences," the media wrote.

The NYT noted that discussions about new ways of military assistance to Ukraine and its future security system have intensified ahead of the arrival of US President-elect Donald Trump in the White House. This is because it is likely to mean "less room for maneuver" for Kyiv.

One of the biggest unknowns for Ukraine is whether Europe and the new US leadership will provide any security guarantees that would prevent Russia from trying to occupy more territory.

Some in the Biden administration have suggested taking more decisive action in his final weeks in office. Some of these steps are already being implemented: The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been allowed to use long-range Western missiles on Russian territory; the supply of American anti-personnel mines has been approved; the Pentagon has also lifted the ban on the deployment of American military contractors in Ukraine to maintain and repair US-provided military equipment.

"The acceleration of U.S. arms shipments in the final months of the Biden administration could help Ukraine enforce a ceasefire or truce line if a settlement is reached, officials said," the NYT said.

– The German publication BILD claims that Ukraine could theoretically need only a few weeks to create its first nuclear bomb.
