"They understood perfectly well": Tarnavskyi named the factor that forced Russian troops to flee from Kherson

Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of the Tavria operational and strategic group of troops, has an explanation for why the Russians made a "difficult decision" to retreat from Kherson in 2022 during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. He believes that if the occupiers had not fled, they could have been surrounded or destroyed.

Tarnavsky spoke about this in the "Year. Kherson" project. The commander noted that the Russian troops were divided by a significant barrier, which is the Dnipro River.

"The bulk of the forces (Russians - ed.) remained on our territory, where we conducted an offensive operation. They understood perfectly well that this group of troops could either be surrounded or destroyed," Tarnavskyi said.

According to the commander, the concept of "encirclement" has become one of the most vulnerable for the Russian military. "As soon as they realize that there is a possibility of such a scenario, they immediately run away professionally. They usually take measures that help them avoid getting their troops as surrounded as possible.

"That is, they would rather escape from the battlefield but not be surrounded," Tarnavsky says.

On November 14, 2022, the flag of Ukraine was officially raised in the liberated Kherson with the participation of President Volodymyr Zelensky. The head of state considers the liberation operation of Ukrainian defenders in Kherson a turning point in the war, indicating that victory is approaching Ukraine.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukrainian defenders forced the Russian army to pull back its positions in the occupied part of the Kherson region. In general, our soldiers have good results on the left bank of the Dnipro, but this is not yet subject to coverage.
