Russian volunteers conduct a "special operation" on the territory of the Russian Federation

Russian volunteers from the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps are conducting an operation in the Belgorod region. Its goal is to create a 'security strip' to protect Ukrainian civilians.

The operation involves only Russian citizens. This was stated by a representative of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Andriy Yusov, in a commentary to Hromadske.

"Today, the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Russian Freedom Legion, consisting of citizens of the Russian Federation, launched an operation to liberate these territories of the Belgorod region from the so-called Putin regime and push back the enemy in order to create a certain security strip to protect Ukrainian civilians," Yusov said.

On the morning of May 22, fighters of the Freedom of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps said they had entered the territory of the Russian Federation, in particular, a number of settlements in the Belgorod and Bryansk regions. The Russians fighting on the side of Ukraine said they were "returning home" because it was time to liberate Russia from the "tyranny of the Kremlin".

Subsequently, Russian media and social media began reporting on the fighting in the border settlements of Belgorod Oblast.

At around 2pm, the Freedom of Russia Legion stated that they had "liberated" Kozynka in Belgorod Oblast and entered the village of Graivoron.

The information was later confirmed by the governor of Belgorod Oblast, Vyacheslav Gladkov, who stated that a "sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" had entered the territory of the Hraivoron district. According to him, Russian and FSB units are "taking measures".
