Starting from the beginning of October, patients with type 1 diabetes can receive test strips to measure their sugar levels under the reimbursement program, which is the mechanism of state reimbursement of the cost of medicines. The test strips can be obtained free of charge or with a partial co-payment.

This was reminded by the Minister of Health of Ukraine, Viktor Liashko, on Facebook on November 14, World Diabetes Day. He noted that more than 2,500 prescriptions for test strips have been issued so far.

Liashko explained that receiving test strips will be free or with a small fee depending on which brand the patient chooses according to their glucose meter.

The Health Minister also emphasized that medications, such as pills or insulin, can also be obtained under the reimbursement program.

Patients with type 2 diabetes who take tablets under this program have a choice of 53 brand names of medicines. Twenty-three of them can be obtained free of charge, 30 with a co-payment.

Patients with diabetes who need insulin therapy can choose from 45 brand names of insulin products under the reimbursement program. Taking into account their different forms, this is 72 drugs.

"Since the beginning of 2023, the NHSU has paid pharmacies more than UAH 2.9 billion for insulin," the Minister said.

Viktor Liashko emphasized that diabetes is a disease that requires constant attention. But it can be controlled with proper treatment, diet, and an active lifestyle. Many people with diabetes lead a full life following the recommendations of doctors.

It is very important to recognize diabetes at an early stage. This will allow you to start treatment on time and change your lifestyle.
