Point Nemo: what the "loneliest place on Earth", where the closest people are International Space Station astronauts, looks like

What is Point Nemo and why it is called "the loneliest place on Earth"

The fact that the "loneliest point" on Earth is closer to astronauts than any other person on the planet has stunned TikTok users. Point Nemo, named after the submarine sailor from Jules Verne's novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, is the most remote place in the middle of the world's ocean.

It is so far from civilization that the closest people to it are those who orbit above us on the International Space Station. The amazing fact was shared by a TikTok user under the nickname Psychopoly.

He pointed out the complete isolation, saying, "If you need someone's help here, it would take 15 days for people to get to you (by boat), which would be equivalent to going two-thirds of the way across the United States." The author of the video did not stop there, noting that Point Nemo is located near the place where the famous mysterious The Bloop sound was discovered, which gave rise to theories about cracked icebergs or a huge unknown sea creature.

The viral video has received more than five million views and has caused a wave of reaction. One user wrote, "I don't even want to think about it," while another shared, "I would never go there alone, if I ever went at all." Others expressed their own creepy thoughts, and some commented, "Almost 80% of the ocean is unexplored, there's something out there, I know it."

In 2022, it became known that NASA is considering decommissioning the International Space Station by sinking it into the ocean over the next decade. The space agency plans to de-orbitalize the laboratory in January 2031, sending it to the "cemetery of spacecraft", which is exactly Point Nemo.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, 62-year-old Harrogate explorer Chris Brown made headlines as the first person to reach Point Nemo. Together with his 30-year-old son Mika, they managed to swim to the pole in just nine days before sharing their journey on social media.
