A majestic temple of the fertility god was found in Egypt. Interestingly, archaeologists have unearthed a secret entrance to the ancient building, which is more than 2000 years old.
The gate to the temple, which was located on the western side of the historical site of Atribis near Sohag, was originally up to 18 meters high. According to the researchers, this is a great example of an Egyptian "pylon" where two towers luxuriously emphasize the main entrance, DailyMail writes.
Experts believe that the found structure was built in Atribis, a formerly successful Egyptian city, in the second century BC.
According to the scientists, the found entrance leads to a previously unknown room, probably a storage room for pottery and amphorae.
Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mohamed Ismail Khaled described the find as "the first nucleus for the discovery of the rest of the elements of the new temple."
The excavated room, which is about 6 meters long and 3 meters wide, has an entrance decorated with reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions. The inscriptions depict the Egyptian god of fertility Min and his wife Repit, usually depicted as a lioness, and their son, the god child Colanthes, archaeologists describe.
According to the researchers, the figures are also surrounded by structures made of astronomical symbols that work as "celestial stars" to measure the hours of the night.
Interestingly, the second door on the pylon's facade leads to a previously unknown staircase that rose at least four flights to the top floor but is now destroyed.
Archaeologists say that further excavations at the Temple of Atribis will now focus on finding traces of the presumed temple that lies behind the room, likely a place of sanctuary for the city's inhabitants.
According to historians, the temple was 51 meters wide and had pylon towers, each of which reached 18 meters in height. Unfortunately, today only 5 meters of the towers remain.
