A film about Mariupol was included in two Oscar shortlists at once

The American Film Academy has announced the Oscar shortlists in 10 categories. The Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol by director and videographer Mstislav Chernov was shortlisted in both categories for which it was submitted.

This is stated in the message of the Oscar organizing committee. In particular, "20 Days in Mariupol" was shortlisted in the categories: Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature.

It is worth noting that the shortlists are used to form the Oscar nominations. They will be announced on January 23, 2024. The award ceremony will take place on March 10, 2024.

"20 Days in Mariupol" is a documentary by Associated Press journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mstislav Chernov. Together with Chernov, photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko worked on the film.

The film tells the story of the beginning of a full-scale war - the bombing of residential buildings and a maternity hospital, constant shelling. It also shows how ordinary Mariupol residents reacted to it. "20 Days in Mariupol by Mstislav Chernov became the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine.

In addition, Maciek Hamela's In the Rearview, a film about Ukraine, was shortlisted in the Best Documentary Feature category.

As a reminder, in 2019, Ukraine nominated Nariman Aliyev's film Home (Evge) for an Oscar, in 2020 - Atlantis by Valentyn Vasyanovych, in 2021 - Bad Roads by Natalia Vorozhbyt, and in 2022 - Klondike by Marina Er Gorbach. Since its independence, Ukraine has nominated films for the Oscars more than 10 times, but none of them have been shortlisted.
