Scientists have finally solved the age-old riddle of which came first – the chicken or the egg? Previous studies show that even hard-shelled eggs probably evolved millions of years ago.

According to scientists, the tools for creating eggs appeared long before chickens. We are talking about single-celled organisms that have evolved into much more complex forms, TheSun writes.

Experts at the University of Geneva have turned to a single-celled species discovered in 2017 in Hawaiian marine sediments. Chromosphaera perkinsii split off from the animal lineage a billion years ago, scientists say.

The team of researchers found that when the cells of this species reach their maximum size, they divide into multicellular colonies with a three-dimensional structure that looks very similar to the early stages of animal embryonic development.

According to experts, this indicates that such a development existed before the first animals appeared about 800 million years ago. That is, nature could have "created eggs" long before the appearance of modern chickens about 10,000 years ago.

"It's amazing! This species, discovered recently, allows us to go back in time by a billion years," said Marin Olivetta, a researcher at the Department of Biochemistry at the Swiss University.
