No more green? How Ukrainian traffic lights may change in 2025

Traffic lights are a key element of road safety in cities, so drivers should know all about them without even thinking. However, starting next year, Ukrainian drivers will probably have to get used to a slightly updated look of the devices.

The Ukrainian Scientific Research and Training Center for Standardization, Certification and Quality Problems (SE UkrNDMC) has developed a new version of DSTU 4092:2024 state standard, which regulates the appearance of traffic lights. The document has not yet been officially published, but its provisions have already been posted on the Bike City consulting Telegram channel. Perhaps the most important innovation is the change of the green color. However, lets explore the innovation gradually.

When the new standard may come into effect

The document states that all innovations should come into force on May 1, 2025. From this moment on, the new requirements will replace the provisions of DSTU 4092-2002, which will be canceled.

What will change in the appearance of traffic lights

• The green traffic light will acquire an emerald hue. The research center insists that drivers perceive it better.
• The arrows on the lenses will be chevron-shaped. This should also make them easier to read.
• The size and placement of bicycle signals will be regulated as follows: there will be a device with a bicycle icon, as well as a 100 mm lens for bike lanes and right road position and a 200 mm lens if the traffic light is placed above the road.
• Bicycle and pedestrian signals will now be shared.
• A countdown timer will appear on both pedestrian and traffic lights, including bicycle signals.
• Pedestrian call buttons and sound warning devices will be introduced.
• There will also be options for introducing and canceling signs with a green arrow at the level of a red signal.

How exactly the green color of the traffic light will change

Of course, the green traffic signal will not be completely replaced. Only its shade will change. It will become bluer, closer to the color of an emerald. Still, it will remain green at its core. That is, no radical changes should be expected. The new shade should only increase the visibility of the green signal while driving around the city.
