How to remove the smell of "baby surprises" from the mattress: an easy way

Living with small children and animals is a constant adventure full of unpredictable situations. One of them may be the presence of urine on the mattress.

Such "surprises" can leave not only stains but also an unpleasant odor. That's why Real Simple told you how to deal with it.

Everyone can experience the smell of urine, regardless of whether they have children or pets. It is difficult to remove, especially if it is not eliminated immediately. However, there are several effective methods that can help you get rid of this problem quickly and easily.

Fresh stains

Fresh urine stains can be cleaned with laundry detergent. First, blot them with paper towels to absorb as much moisture as possible.

Then, prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of concentrated laundry detergent with 1 cup of warm water. Dampen a soft-bristled brush with the solution and gently rub the mattress from the outside of the stain to the center.

After that, use paper towels to remove excess moisture again and sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the affected area. Allow the mattress to air dry for several hours, and then vacuum up any remaining powder.

Old stains

Old urine stains require a deeper cleaning. First, make a paste of baking soda and water in a 3:1 ratio. Apply it to the stain and use a soft-bristled brush to rub the mixture into the mattress fibers.

Then let the paste dry and vacuum up any dry residue.

If baking soda doesn't work, try spraying the stained areas with distilled white vinegar. At first, the acid smell will be quite strong, but it will dissipate when the mattress dries.
