Cleaning leather surfaces is not an easy task. The situation becomes even more complicated when dealing with ink stains. However, in most cases, you can completely remove stains from leather with patience and the right materials. Some types of ink, such as ballpoint pens, are easier to wipe off, while permanent markers require a lot of effort.

Experts told us how to remove ink from leather surfaces. There is no need to use aggressive chemical solvents.

Materials and ingredients needed:

  • bowl or saucepan;
  • isopropyl alcohol;
  • cotton swabs;
  • skin conditioner.

Important details

If the ink is fresh, quickly blot the stain with a dry white cloth or paper towel. Do not rub it under any circumstances.

Before removing a fresh or dried ink stain, test the product in an inconspicuous place to make sure the leather ink does not smudge. Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the swab on the inside seam or hidden upholstery. If the swab becomes stained, it is probably time to use a professional leather cleaner. If not, you can continue.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Soak a cotton swab or white cloth in alcohol.
  2. Work from the outside of the stain to the center to prevent the ink from spreading.
  3. Gently blot the stain and replace the swab for the next use.
  4. Continue blotting gently until the ink is gone. If you don't have isopropyl alcohol on hand, you can use regular vodka.
  5. Once the ink is gone, let the leather dry naturally, away from direct sunlight or heat.
  6. Use a leather conditioner to leave surfaces smooth and supple.

Additional tips for removing ink stains from leather

Avoid products that contain abrasive particles. Do not rub the surface. Most leather upholstery will react negatively to scrubbing, resulting in discoloration or surface damage.

You can find tips on how to use hairspray online. Modern hairsprays contain ingredients that cause stains on the skin and can do much more harm than good.

Never use a colored napkin or towel to treat a leather stain.
