SpaceX has created a new space suit that is specially designed for today's private spacewalk by the Polaris Dawn mission. According to the creators of the newest space suit, "It's something like a suit of armor made of fabric."
The stylish and innovative new off-ship suit will show its capabilities during the first-ever private spacewalk by two Polaris Dawn astronauts. The developers of the suit are confident that it will cope with the tasks, Space.com reports.
The spacesuit was developed for the astronauts of the Polaris Dawn mission, who are currently in space.

According to SpaceX, the EVA suit is designed for off-ship activities. It is based on the familiar black-and-white Intravehicular Spacecraft Attachment (IVA), but with improvements in key areas to make it lightweight and unobtrusive for astronauts in the extreme environment of outer space.
"It's kind of like armor made of fabric," said SpaceX Chief Engineer Eric Kraus.
The suit was designed and manufactured at SpaceX in Hawthorne, California, with the expectation of in-house production.

The spacesuit also has an additional Faraday layer, or conductive cage, around the suit that protects it from external electrical fields.
The helmet is equipped with a head-up display (HUD) with a transparent screen. This provides important telemetry for the crew, including pressure, temperature, and relative humidity, without obstructing the view. It also has a coating for astronaut safety.
"The visor of the EVA suit is made of polycarbonate and coated with copper and Ico, or indium tenoxide. These two coatings together reflect the sun away from the crew and also reflect infrared heat back to the crew as they look out into deep space," added Eric Kraus.
The developers call the new suit high-tech armor.

In addition to the historic spacewalk, SpaceX has big ambitions for the new spacesuit. With each generation, the company strives to improve its technology and make the suits more technologically advanced.
"The ultimate goal is to be able to put on a spacesuit, go out and do work anywhere in the solar system, and not feel like you're wearing anything more than you normally wear daily," said SpaceX Senior Manager of Space Suits Christ Trigg.
