Russia calls the doping scam at the Sochi Olympics a stunning success, "which was not forgiven"
The ban on Russian athletes using national symbols at international competitions is related to the victory of the Russian national team at the Sochi Olympics, not to the disclosure of the aggressor country's state doping system. Western countries allegedly could not ignore the "stunning success" of the hosts of the 2024 Games.
This was stated by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko in a commentary to the propaganda news agency TASS. According to him, the further suspension of athletes from the aggressor country is linked to lies and slander, and Russia is not really to blame.
"We faced double standards in the field of sports at international competitions after the amazing success in Sochi, which was not forgiven. There was a lot of mythology, they tried to make us a country that built its victories on doping. There were a lot of lies, fraud and traditional methods used by countries that are unfriendly to us. They are trying to exclude us from the world sports system. But they are not succeeding. Following the lead of the Anglo-Saxons, all international organisations began to put obstacles in the way of our athletes' participation in international sports competitions," Chernyshenko said.
After the Sochi Olympics, Russia was mired in numerous doping scandals. The system of substitution of "dirty" samples of athletes by FSB officers was revealed.
On January 25, the International Olympic Committee issued a statement regarding the suspension of athletes from Russia and Belarus, in which it noted that it was ready to consider the return of athletes from these countries to international competitions. However, the athletes must meet certain criteria, including not supporting the war in Ukraine. This caused outrage in Russia. In particular, a well-known Russian figure skating coach, Valentina Tyukova, accused Western countries of betrayal "after all that Russia has done for the world".
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Ilya Averbukh, the vice-champion of the Olympic figure skating games, called the IOC's demands that Russian athletes condemn the war in Ukraine "interference in their personal lives". And Alexander Legkov, the champion of the Sochi 2004 games, said he was tired of performing without the flag and anthem.
