Gooseberries: more useful information about a well-known berry

The season of berries is approaching its equator. There is also a reason to think about gooseberry, as its berries not only have a special flavor but also an original combination of living properties with a specific effect on people's health.

Gooseberry bushes are widespread in Ukraine and bear fruit in the middle of summer. Berries and leaves of the plant are used in culinary and natural medicine. Gooseberry is often called "the King's berry" for its delicious flavor and unappreciated goodness. This is not surprising as a 100-gram portion of fresh berries contains as much vitamin C as 20 oranges. Although these berries themselves are sour, they can add a special flavour to the dishes.

CONTENT OF NUTRIENTS

Half a glass of these berries contains 33 calories, less than a gram of protein, less than a gram of fat, 8 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber and zero grams of sugar. These berries are rich in antioxidants, which reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart-related issues, diabetes and cancer. They are a great source of vitamins C, E, and A as well as iron and calcium.

Since fresh gooseberries contain a lot of fiber and little sugar, they are an ideal ingredient for a variety of dishes.

Gooseberries will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about two days. They are also easy to freeze. They can be pickled, added to caramel and summer fruit salads or smashed into juice, jam or jelly.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Antioxidants and vitamins found in gooseberries have low health benefits. High concentrations of vitamin C improve various functions of the immune system and help the body to recover more quickly after illness. These berries also contain several types of flavonols, chemical substances that are associated with improved memory.

DIABETES CONTROL

Soluble fiber in gooseberries helps to reduce the rate of glucose absorption, which lowers the glucose in the blood. Berries also positively affect the level of glucose and lipids in the blood of people with type 2 diabetes.

DIGESTION IMPROVEMENT

Fiber found in these berries also regulates excretion and helps to relieve symptoms of such conditions as irritable bowel syndrome. The high level of vitamin C favors the absorption of other nutrients, such as calcium and other minerals.

EYE HEALTH

Gooseberries are rich in vitamin A, which is one of the key and indispensable elements for better eye health and better visual acuity. Vitamin A not only has a positive effect on vision but can also reduce the risk of age-related degeneration of yellow eyes. Vitamin C content favors eye protection against pink eye and other infections.

ENHANCING IMMUNITY

One 100-gram serving of gooseberries provides 300 mg of vitamin C, which is twice the recommended dosage for adults. They also contain a significant amount of polyphenols, alkaloids and flavonoids. Gooseberry also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

MEMORY AND BRAIN HEALTH

Phytonutrients and antioxidants in gooseberries help improve memory by fighting free radicals that attack and damage brain cells. A high concentration of vitamin C helps the body to produce noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter believed to improve brain function in people with dementia.
