"It's like a long-distance run": Olena Zelenska on changes in relationship with her husband

Olena Zelenska shares how her relationship with her husband, President of Ukraine, has changed

Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska has admitted that her relationship with her husband, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has changed significantly since the outbreak of a full-scale war. She explained that their 20-year marriage has become stronger during these 2.5 years despite the fact that the spouses see each other less than before.

Olena Zelenska explained that this was because the couple began to tangibly support each other. As she noted in an interview with the Daily Mail, they "never bore each other."

"I think we've become closer and more connected because we've supported each other in the way we hoped we would. I think I have not let him down, and he never lets me down. We don't see each other as often as we would like, so every meeting is a joy. We never get tired of each other, never bore each other. And this makes the family stronger," the first lady said.

With the outbreak of the big war, she and her children - 20-year-old Oleksandr and 11-year-old Kyrylo - have to live separately from Volodymyr. And although their meetings were only for a few hours a week, now, according to Olena, they have become more frequent.

"This is not a normal life for anyone living in a country at war. It is a constant psychological burden and pressure. I hope that when that pressure lessens, with our victory, we can stay reasonable and we'll be okay. But right now I think we are emotionally close and we understand each other very well. That's actually very important when you know how to respect your loved ones. I'm sure that love alone is not enough. And I'm happy that I can respect my husband, because it would be very hard to stay with him, even with great love, if I didn't believe in his honesty," she admitted.

She added that she was incredibly proud of Volodymyr Zelensky's endurance and his firm decision to stay in Ukraine and continue leading the state at the beginning of the Russian invasion.

"In the terrible days, weeks and months at the beginning of the war, I never doubted for a second how he would behave. But I am even more proud of his resilience. This is like a long-distance run. It is possible to show courage once - sometimes it can be an accident. But when you constantly put all your strength and energy into achieving a common goal, it requires something more. He is doing well, and I pray that he does not lose his strength and power, because we need him as he is: strong and stubborn," the first lady continued.
