"In Skadovsk, a woman was executed because of the Ukrainian language. Are you serious?" Actress Pustovit shamed Kvartal 95 for a bad joke
Ukrainian actress and star of The First Swallows, Anastasia Pustovit, emotionally condemned the unfortunate joke about "Skadovsk" broadcast by Kvartal 95 on New Year's Eve. The actress comes from Skadovsk, temporarily occupied by Russians, so the topic of mocking her hometown is unpleasant for her.
In an interview with Alina Dorotiuk, Anastasia said that her whole family has always spoken Ukrainian, despite their roots in the eastern territories of Ukraine, which are often called Russian-speaking. Even her grandfather, who has long lived in Russia, speaks his native dialect. Therefore, it is inappropriate to call Skadovsk Russian-speaking.
"It's piggish. This is a huge disrespect for those people. I'm done with these jokes about the eastern territories and the use of the language. In Skadovsk, a woman was publicly executed because of the Ukrainian language. The torturers, the former ATO soldiers who were there... Are you serious? Now it is dangerous for Skadovsk and all the occupied territories in general to speak Ukrainian. It can cost them their lives or health. Have some conscience. Have some respect," Pustovit spoke emotionally about the bad jokes.
In particular, Anastasia added that they don't make fun of her for speaking Ukrainian in Skadovsk. Her uncle used to work at the market and spoke the state language fluently.
The actress and her parents moved from Skadovsk to Nemishaieve, Kyiv region, at the age of two. But she still has a grandmother in her hometown, and her family always came to visit her, even from Russia, on holidays. Nowadays, no one goes there anymore because of the occupying country, but her grandmother remains in Skadovsk.
"For us, Skadovsk has always been a place where the whole family gathers, coming from all over Ukraine. At that time, part of the family [my mother's relatives – Ed. Now we don't communicate with them," the actress said.
Anastasiia claims that her grandmother has found a friend with whom she lives and tries not to go out. The granddaughter is very worried about her life because she is engaged in volunteer activities and is afraid that this will not affect her grandmother in the occupied territory.
"It's good that she is a little out of context. A woman came to live with her, they live together and go out quietly. She is not involved in all those events. Why do I say good? Because I would not want someone to come to her and ask her something because of my volunteer work. And the fact that she doesn't know anything and doesn't go anywhere is very good. I ask her not to do that," Pustovit said.
However, it is not known how the woman lives in the occupied territories. She refused to give up her Russian passport to receive her pension, and she is categorically against moving to Ukraine.
"For quite a long time, we had a quarrel to get her to take a Russian passport because she needs to receive her pension. She resisted for a very long time. We explained to her that it was not a betrayal, but a way to survive, because she categorically refused to leave. We tried to persuade her to leave through Crimea as well... She refuses," the actress explained in more detail.
