Zelenskyy asks Scholz for long-range weapons and support on Ukraine's way to NATO: BILD reveals whether the requests will be met
At a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a new military aid package worth about €1.5 billion. However, he noted that the country will not send heavy military equipment to Kyiv and has not yet approved accelerated accession to NATO.
This was reported by BILD, citing sources in the German Defense Ministry. They say that Berlin "does not believe that Ukraine will soon be able to conduct a counteroffensive in the near future."
"Zelenskyy asked German Chancellor Scholz for permission to strike Russia with Western weapons and a guarantee of quick accession to NATO. Scholz ignored it," the newspaper says.
It is noted that against the backdrop of fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine and the ongoing pressure of Russian troops, the Ukrainian leader made a diplomatic tour of European capitals "to secure military and financial support for the country for the next year."
The visit to Berlin followed meetings in London, Paris, and Rome, where Zelenskyy emphasized the need to continue providing assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In particular, the talks with the German Chancellor on October 11 were the third in the fall of 2024.
During the meeting, Scholz announced a new €1.4 billion aid package for Ukraine, including air defense systems, Gepard anti-aircraft guns, tanks, armored vehicles, combat drones, artillery shells, and radar systems. Belgium, Denmark and Norway also contrubuted to the package.
Scholz emphasized that Germany remains Ukraine's biggest European supplier of military aid, second only to the United States on the world stage. At the same time, he "ignored" the request to allow Ukraine to strike deep in Russia and to supply long-range Taurus missiles and Leopard 2 tanks. He also did not approve of Ukraine's accelerated accession to NATO.
As reported, according to opinion polls, almost half of German residents believe that Ukraine should cede part of its territories to achieve peace. At the same time, more than a third of Germans oppose any territorial concessions.
Earlier, journalists found out that hundreds of suspicious cargoes are still being transported from Germany to Russia in violation of sanctions. For example, in 2023, more than 300 machines that could be used by the Russians to produce car parts or ammunition were shipped.
