During Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin's visit to Mongolia, protesters tried to unfurl a Ukrainian flag. Police and security forces prevented the action, which took place in Ulaanbaatar.
This was reported by Radio Liberty. On September 3, Putin arrived in Mongolia, where he was met solemnly.
A red carpet was rolled out for the Russian dictator at Ulaanbaatar International Airport and an honor guard was arranged. Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh accompanied Putin to the Government Palace, where they paid tribute to the statue of Genghis Khan, followed by private meetings.
This visit is Putin's first to Mongolia in five years and comes amid numerous calls for Mongolia to comply with the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for the Russian president. The ICC has been seeking Putin for 18 months for the illegal deportation and transfer of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia.
Mongolia joined the International Criminal Court in 2003. From the point of view of the ICC, the Rome Statute and international law, Putin must be detained.
Back on August 30, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling on Mongolia to fulfill its obligations under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin when he arrives in the country for a visit. The war criminal must be transferred to the court in The Hague under an international warrant.
Putin's visit to Mongolia was the Russian dictator's first trip to a state party to the Rome Statute of the ICC after a court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for him in March 2023.
It should be reminded that Mongolia, which signed the Rome Statute in 2000 and ratified it in 2002, formally has to comply with the requirements of the International Criminal Court.
As reported, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said that Mongolia, which did not comply with the ICC's arrest warrant for Russian dictator Putin, dealt a heavy blow to the international justice system. The country allowed the criminal to escape justice, thus sharing responsibility for his war crimes against Ukraine.
The European Union has previously stated that it expects Mongolia to fulfill its obligations under the Putin arrest warrant. Human Rights Watch said that Ulaanbaatar should ban the dictator from entering the country or arrest him if he enters.
