German government approves budget for 2025 with half less aid for Ukraine: what's happening

On July 17, the German government approved the budget for 2025. According to it, Berlin will allocate half as much money for military aid to Ukraine.

According to Spiegel, the approved draft budget is aimed at stimulating the economy. It is yet to be considered by the German parliament, the Bundestag.

The planned expenditures of the German budget amount to 480.6 billion euros.

New borrowings in 2025 will amount to 43.8 billion euros.

The draft envisages an increase in defense spending by €1.3 billion to €53 billion.

This is less than German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expected.

It is expected that the Bundestag will continue discussions on defense when considering the draft budget.

It will begin consideration in September.

The German parliament is likely to approve the supplementary budget for the current year on November 8, and the budget for the next year on November 29. Until then, MPs can make changes.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Reuters said that in 2025 Germany could halve its military aid to Ukraine – to 4 billion euros, compared to 8 billion euros provided in 2024. The eurozone's largest economy avoided recession at the beginning of the year, but growth was slower than forecast, the agency noted.

In 2028, Germany's regular budget is projected to have a deficit of 39 billion euros, and 28 billion euros will be needed to achieve NATO's goal without a special fund.

Recently, it became known that Berlin secretly transferred military aid to Ukraine, including heavy armored vehicles. In late June and early July, the country delivered another significant defense package to Kyiv.

Earlier, Pistorius asked Finance Minister Christian Lindner for additional funding for Ukraine. Approximately 7 billion euros allocated in the current federal budget are almost spent or reserved for contracts.
