NATO confirms the presence of DPRK military in Russia and makes an interesting assumption
NATO has evidence that North Korea has sent troops to Russia. The allies are actively consulting on this issue and are awaiting information from South Korean representatives to provide to the North Atlantic Council.
This was announced on Wednesday, October 23, by North Atlantic Alliance spokeswoman Farah Dahlalla, DW reports. According to her, the deployment of DPRK troops in Russia is another sign that the Russian army has suffered significant losses in the war in Ukraine.
"Allies have confirmed evidence of the deployment of DPRK troops in Russia. If these troops have to fight in Ukraine, it will mean a significant increase in North Korea's support for Russia's illegal war and another sign of Russia's significant losses on the front line," the spokesperson said.
The NATO spokesperson added that NATO members are actively consulting on this issue. Representatives of the Republic of Korea are to provide the information at their disposal to the North Atlantic Council for further discussion.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also stated that the United States has evidence of North Korean military presence in Russia. At the same time, he noted that it is not known what exactly the DPRK soldiers will be doing there. Earlier, Seoul and Kyiv reported that several thousand North Korean troops were being sent to Russia.
In particular, South Korean intelligence has established that 12,000 military personnel have arrived in Russia from the DPRK. Among them are units of special operations forces. The head of the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov, said that 11,000 DPRK infantrymen are training in eastern Russia to fight against Ukraine. In a few weeks, they will reinforce the units of the Russian occupation army.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, North Korea's representative to the UN said that Pyongyang allegedly did not send military personnel to participate in the war on the side of Russia against Ukraine. He called the information "unfounded rumors."
