"For the state not to waste precious time": law expert explains whether Ukrainians abroad should panic due to the new mobilization law and the need to update data

Ukrainians abroad should update their data

The new law on mobilization, which was passed by the Verkhovna Rada, contains a provision that Ukrainian men abroad will have to update their data within 60 days at appropriate centers or through an electronic cabinet. However, this law does not establish any obligation to return to Ukraine after that.

This was stated by Fedir Venislavskyi, MP, PhD in Law, member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence in an exclusive interview with OBOZ.UA. He noted that updating the credentials is necessary primarily so that the state does not waste time and resources informing men who are not in the country.

According to him, the law does not define any new obligations for citizens who update or receive military documents to return to Ukraine, and it is difficult to imagine mechanisms for fulfilling these obligations for men abroad.

"It is important for us that citizens of Ukraine who are liable for military service and live abroad update their personal data. Because a person can live abroad and still receive notices and summonses to addresses registered with the military registration and enlistment office. The state spends time, material and human resources to inform a person who, in principle, cannot be informed because he is not in this city," Venislavskyi said.

If a person who is abroad receives a military registration document remotely, he can do so via e-mail, by phone or through the consulate when activating or receiving consular services. Therefore, there are no problems in this case, and no negative consequences are foreseen for these persons.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense explained what will change for Ukrainians after the law on mobilization comes into force. In particular, men between the ages of 25 and 60 will need to carry a military ID. The document will have to be provided at the request of a representative of the military commissariat, border guard service or police officer.

As it has become known, about half of Ukrainians believe that the mobilization process in Ukraine is currently going in the wrong direction. At the same time, about 60% of citizens of our country negatively assess the work of the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support and blame the military commissariats for the disruption of mobilization.
