Dynamo Kyiv midfielder Andriy Yarmolenko has suggested that one of the reasons Serhiy Sydorchuk moved to the Belgian championship was the Russian war in Ukraine. Yarmolenko believes that the former Bila Tserkva captain agreed to a transfer to Westerlo to take his family out of the country.

"I think that if it were not for the war and if his children and wife could stay in Kyiv, he would not have moved anywhere," Andriy was quoted as saying by the Dynamo press service.

It should be noted that Sydorchuk continued his career in Europe after 11 years of playing for the Kyiv team even though transfer windows in the top leagues have closed. The 32-year-old holding midfielder unexpectedly signed a three-year contract with Westerlo.

Serhiy had a disastrous debut for his new club. Westerlo lost to Antwerp (0:3) in the 7th round of the Belgian football championship, and the Ukrainian was directly involved in the first conceded goal.

After his goalkeeper passed the ball to Sydorchuk (No. 15), he did not notice the opponent behind him. Mandela Keita was able to intercept the ball and pass it to Janssen, which resulted in the Dutchman opening the scoring.
