Ukrainians showed their attitude to Russia and Belarus at the World Wrestling Championship

Our athletes demonstrated a principled civic position

Ukrainian wrestlers ignored Russians and Belarusians at the Junior World Championships, which is held in the Jordanian capital of Aman on August 14-15. Ukraine was represented by 10 athletes at the tournament and three of them had their bouts with "neutral" athletes.

Ivan Prymachenko defeated Belarussian Vladislav Kozlov in the semifinals in the 97 kg weight category. Alim Mesusvetov (79 kg) lost to Russia's Ibragim Kadiev in the consolation bout for the bronze medal and Vladimir Kochanov (125 kg) defeated Alexander Gradovkin of Belarus.

Our compatriots did not shake hands with their rivals after all these fights.

International Wrestling Federation (UWW) rules stipulate that athletes must shake hands before and after a match. The head of the NOC Vadym Huttsait in an interview with Tribuna said that the Ukrainian side agreed on the refusal to shake hands with representatives of the Russian Federation and RB with the UWW.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, a loud scandal broke out at the World Fencing Championships after Ukrainian saber fencer Olha Kharlan refused to shake hands with Russian Anna Smirnova.

The IOC has since called on organizers for sensitivity in competitions between Ukrainians and Russians and granted Kharlan a direct ticket to the 2024 Olympics.
